Nipomo

Welcome to Nipomo, a small city on the mesa in the southern area of San Luis Obispo County on the central coast of California. The name Nipomo is derived from a Chumash word, nepomah meaning “foot of the hill,” and Chumash were the original inhabitants of the area going back some 9,000 years.

Nipomo is the historical home of its founder, Captain William G. Dana whose descendants populated the area. His adobe house is being restored by the Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos and annual festivals and historical events are held here.

Today Nipomo is highly sought after for having one of the best micro climates in the country with an average year round temperature between 68-75. Orchards and flowers abound in and all around the city and one of the attractions is the Nipomo Native Gardens where a forest of native plants and trees are maintained by docents from the Nipomo Native Gardens Society. This 12-acre site is located between Pomeroy, Camino Caballo and Osage and features native plant communities endemic to the Nipomo Mesa and Nipomo Dunes.

Along the country roads throughout town are rows of thousands of blue gum eucalyptus trees that were planted here in 1908 in anticipation of developing a timber industry which never came to fruition. In addition to being known for stands of eucalyptus trees, Nipomo currently offers 57 holes of great golf: 3 nine hole courses in Blacklake and 30 holes in the 5-Star Golf Resort Community of Trilogy at Monarch Dunes.
